Make a Corset Workshop - Coming Soon

£340.00

Make an overbust corset from start to finish in this 3 day class suitable for beginners and intermediates. All professional standard materials supplied by Sew Curvy. We will cover the following essential steps.

  • You'll measure and choose your pattern size from the supplied Sew Curvy pattern, a fabulous curvy pattern that works on all figures. This pattern was developed by professional corsetiere Julia Bremble. We do not use patterns by the mainstream pattern companies for good reason. I’ll explain why at the class ;)

  • Make a mock-up to test fit

  • Learn about the history & theory of corsetry

  • Sew a single layer, waist reducing Victorian corset from your mock-up

  • Learn about specialist corset materials & hardware

  • Insert a busk, handle boning, set grommets/eyelets - all essential basic skills

  • Learn about finishing options.

  • Leave with a properly sized corset to wear, or make one for a friend.

Students should have some experience in basic sewing and be able to follow a pattern and operate a sewing machine.

How much is it?
The cost of the 3 day course is £330 which includes your toile materials, your pattern, a stainless steel busk, steel boning, eyelets and lacing as well as your choice from a range of specialist corsetry fabrics. All materials are professional quality from Sew Curvy. As is the pattern which is specially designed to produce a far curvier result than big pattern company versions.

Where is it?
Due to the Covid 19 crises I’ve not booked a venue yet, as I don’t know where will reopen or how many will book. If numbers are no more than 2 I can accommodate in my studio, if more places sell then I can book a venue locally. Any booked venue will be in the Paisley/Renfrewshire area and will be accessible by public transport or by car.

The area
I changed from Glasgow classes to here because travel and parking are easy and cheap and there’s lots of nearby facilities. But also, the area has a long history with textiles, including the famous Paisley print of course,  and there are nearby museum such as Sma' Shot Cottages which a small museum on textiles, the weavers cottage museum at nearby Kilbarchan and a wonderful, eclectic costume museum a short and attractive drive away at Dalgarven Mill. All of course subject to Covid reopenings

How do I get there?
The A737 branches off the M8 just past the airport, it takes approximately 25 minutes from Glasgow city centre. There is also a regular train service from Glasgow Central Station.

I'm coming from further away, can I get there?
For for those travelling further: Paisley is the nearest town to Glasgow Airport. There are several hotels around the airport, as well as lots of smaller local accommodation. Or of course the entire city centre is close by.  Previous students travelling here have found great Air B&Bs nearby as well. I would suggest looking in either Glasgow city centre, near Central Station or near the m8 if driving. Or in Paisley. Or in the villages nearby, again if driving.

Why 3 days?
I've tried running a construction class over 2 days, there isn't enough time. Beginners run out of time rapidly and it restricts what we can do. Also, it's good to allow for some time for chat about corsets etc. and for it to be fun and not an intense rush. Though it can still get that way by Sunday!

What are the times?
The class will run from 09:30 until 16:30.

What about food and drink?
There are tea and coffee facilities at the venue and nearby cafes and restaurants for lunch. We usually all go as a group to get a break (there’s a great cafe nearby who also do Vegan and Gluten Free options)  but of course you're free to go for a wander yourself or bring sandwiches if you prefer.

Social Distancing
Every effort will be made to social distance. However it is tricky to help students with machine or with fitting and socially distance. I would recommend a mask as it makes all of us feel more secure. I will have hand sanitiser and anti bacterial wipe on hand. The situation is changing daily so hopefully the crises will ease soon.

What you will need:

Please contact to discuss. One venue I use has machines available, or I can lend a limited number of machines. If you’re driving then please do bring your own machine as it eliminates the time familairising yourself with an unknown maching.
The core materials are provided, all you will need to bring is your basic sewing kit. So, thread to go with the fabric you’ll be choosing. Scissors for both paper and fabric,  hand sewing needles, pins and marking materials. Also a pen or pencil and notepad.

I’ll be bringing specialist tools with me. I am discussing designing a kit with Julia at Sew Curvy with some basic relevant tools. If we get that sorted out soon I will send out a mail letting you know.

The most important thing you can bring is your enthusiasm :)

Class numbers are limited to a maximum of 5 for the best learning  experience.
